National Disability Employment Awareness Month each October recognizes the societal and workforce contributions of people with disabilities. Congress designated in 1945 the first “National Employ the Physically Handicapped Week”; the word “physically” was removed in 1962 to allow for the inclusion of all Americans with disabilities. In 1988, the week was extended to a month and changed its name to “National Disability Employment Awareness Month.”

  • It is still a huge problems that he state voc rehab, ILCs and advocacy agencies focus on needs of developmentally delayed first and sometimes only , when so many others could work with equal access to supports and assistance.

  • I am disabled (blind) and I am saddened to find that this article about disabilities is not published in a format that is accessible to blind people. Much of the valuable information is presented as graphics without any accompanying text that a screen reader program can read.

    • For what it’s worth, I’m partially-sighted, and the graphics are too small for sighted people like me, too.
